Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Iliff, Colorado. Whether you require a drug or alcohol assessment via hair samples, our expertise in hair-testing is unmatched. We have centers across cities Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing solutions.

Lately, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle analysis. Many organizations, legal entities, and addiction treatment specialists now opt for hair-based tests over conventional urine tests. Hair tests cater to zero-tolerance policies from employers, legal directives from courts, or probation requirements. Their key advantage is an extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, monitored during collection, making it extremely challenging to tamper. Yet, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use over the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become perceived as a formidable instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected in proximity to the scalp, hair can deliver up to an approximately 3-month detection scope for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (around the dimension of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We propose weighing the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair indicates all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps entailed in the laboratory progression of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This entails authenticating that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption on the majority of samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to be permissible in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a considerably reduced concentration than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All assumptive positive samples are cleansed in advance of confirmation as essential. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a briefer detection range.
  • Challenge in deception: It is exceedingly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Delivers historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Discrepancies in findings: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test itself scrutinizes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
