Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Irondale, Colorado. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise at Accredited Drug Testing ensures that hair tests can be conducted at our facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for these tests. Hair tests enable analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests as a method of drug screening has grown significantly in recent years. Numerous employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation utilize these tests. The advantage lies in the extended detection time for drugs, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it almost tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for pinpointing drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair stores a prolonged history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month period for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands of hair (similar to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, additional panels, or testing above 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale is advisable. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair solely pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory step involving the incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s system. It entails ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any pending data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs. Though cost-efficient in excluding drug presence in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening stage yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. This step involves retrieving drugs from hair at concentrations lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive results during screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are washed as necessary prior to confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Tamper resistance: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It allows for tracking drug usage patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: There’s a 5-7 day timeline before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variances such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to hair strands and not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
