Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Jamestown, Colorado. For those in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this method with centers across all cities Nationwide that facilitate hair sample tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests provide insights into drug, alcohol/ETG usage, and bespoke testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been adopted as a method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are preferring hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict anti-drug use policies, legal entities, and probationary systems due to its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, observed collection, and higher resistance to adulteration. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process of hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary, swift assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that appear presumptively positive in the Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Preparation during Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirming any positive result from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as needed. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenges in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, thus enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage patterns: It outlines a timeline of drug use rather than recent activity only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is often more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is occasionally used, but it is the hair strand analyzed, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
