Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Kline, Colorado. For those requiring drug or alcohol analysis through hair samples, our expertise in hair testing is supported by our testing centers located across all major cities nationwide, allowing for seamless hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair drug tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, and judicial systems for those on probation. Their primary advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days and the observed collection process reduces cheating potential. Although, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of long-term alcohol and substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, the collection of an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is first processed into a laboratory's system. It comprises verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing other necessary data entry that might not be captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage for most samples, although a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening require another confirmation step.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), signifying the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to deceive: Altering hair drug test results is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
