Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Laporte, Colorado. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, and our testing centers are available in every city across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Our hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific requirements.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers often use hair tests due to their extended detection capability—up to 90 days—and reliable collection process, which makes cheating almost impossible. For the most accurate results of drug use within the last 5 days, however, urine tests are preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the root, hair can offer a detection span of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the perfect amount for testing and confirming. For EtG, additional exams, or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the hair sample. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount from body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically talk about scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair refers to any other type (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The four essential steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with a presumptive positive result require a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more challenging method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, making results more reliable.
  • Shows historical usage: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot track recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability of results: Aspects like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: The so-called "hair follicle tests" actually test the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Surpasses Urine Testing in Laporte, CO
Hair follicle testing offers a distinct advantage over traditional urine tests in terms of detection and reliability. While urine tests typically cover a short detection window, hair testing can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, offering a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug habits. This superior accuracy ensures more truthful results and supports better decision-making for employers.

Additionally, hair testing is less susceptible to manipulation compared to urine tests. With observed collection procedures, the chances of sample tampering are significantly reduced, ensuring the integrity of the results. For organizations in Laporte, CO, hair follicle testing not only provides peace of mind with its reliability but also promotes a safer, drug-free workplace environment.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
