Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Las Animas, Colorado. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities located in cities across the USA capable of conducting these tests. Generally, you should have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Over the past few years, the approach to drug testing has shifted towards the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests to standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance drug policies, legal proceedings, and probation requirements are bolstered by hair follicle drug tests. Key advantages include an extended detection window for substances, usually up to 90 days, collection under observation, and a test that is nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests retain the most accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of drug and alcohol usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled close to the scalp, hair delivers an approximate three-month detection period for substances. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, considered an optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The primary steps in the lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug use. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be validated to stand as evidence in legal proceedings. Any samples yielding a positive indication in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most complex methodologies.

Any positive results from screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that test positive in Screening undergo a washing process before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals consumption trends: It can highlight patterns of drug use over time, not only recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites found in the hair.

Note: Although colloquially termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
