Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lay, Colorado. Need a hair drug or alcohol screening? Our expertise in hair testing stretches across numerous centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary for testing. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probationers benefit from hair tests, which offer a longer drug detection period—up to 90 days. The collection is supervised, making tampering nearly impossible. For drug use within the last 5 days, however, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-lasting record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and other substances. The process of hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any additional data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be considered valid in a legal setting. Any samples that are initially positive during Screening need a further confirmation step.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a lower concentration compared to the concentrations in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any Screening positive result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed when necessary before confirmation. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection frame.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: Provides an overview of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Generally, 5-7 days are required before drugs appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although it's commonly called a "hair follicle test", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lay, CO, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing due to its superior accuracy and detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses can detect drug use over months, providing a more reliable overview of past substance consumption. This method offers a chemical history that urine cannot match, making it the preferred choice for many employers.

Hair testing also minimizes the chances of tampering, ensuring results are as reliable as they are veracious. In comparison, urine tests often face challenges regarding sample adulteration. The choice of hair tests gives organizations a clear victory in the battle for precision and trustworthiness.

Extended Detection Window

In Lay, CO, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, monitoring substance use for up to 90 days. This method empowers employers by providing a comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug use history. Unlike shorter-term tests, hair analyses reveal long-term consumption, thus depicting a clearer picture of habits and behaviors.

The broader detection period of hair tests highlights habitual usage, allowing stakeholders to base decisions on a substantial time frame rather than a brief snapshot. Hence, employers can make informed choices grounded in comprehensive evidence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Lay, CO, is renowned for its tamper-resistant qualities. The method significantly decreases the possibility of sample adulteration, offering results that are dependable and difficult to contest. Tampering concerns, prevalent in other types of tests, are virtually eliminated here.

The robustness of hair tests ensures that the integrity of the sample remains intact from collection to result. This reliability provides employers and organizations with incontestable evidence of substance use patterns, fostering trust in the findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
