Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Leadville, Colorado. Whether you require a drug or alcohol screening via hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair follicle testing, with facilities located in every city across the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair examinations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly shifted towards using hair follicle testing. Many organizations, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle testing is preferred by businesses with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals. A hair test's significant advantage is its extensive drug detection timeframe, generally up to 90 days, under supervised collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It offers a prolonged historical view of substance intake by locking biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. This process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair is collectable. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the foundational step of introducing a sample into a laboratory system. It verifies the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to negate drug use in many samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for legal admittance. Any samples appearing positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, hair treatments receive drugs at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making it the most challenging method to execute.

Positive Screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are tough to cheat, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a record of drug use over extended periods rather than merely detecting current usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentration in hair may vary due to factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
