Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Leyner, Colorado. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with facilities across all cities Nationwide equipped to handle hair sample collections. Typically, hair length between 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is necessary. Analyzing hair can help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored test options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly embraced hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers imposing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers utilize these tests. The prominent advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection span, reaching up to 90 days. The supervised collection procedure ensures accuracy and minimizes chances of tampering, yet urine tests remain unsurpassed for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug activity by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional parameters, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially logged into a laboratory system. This process includes confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before Confirmation as required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Reduced likelihood of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: This method can indicate a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically requires about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
