In Louisville, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Our centers across the nation, including all major cities, are adept at conducting such tests. If hair or alcohol testing is needed, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is typically required. Hair analyses can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing increasingly favors the hair follicle method. Many organizations, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists now opt for hair over urine tests. Entities with strict drug-free policies, probationers, and legal systems often employ this for its 90-day detection capabilities, conducted under observation to prevent tampering. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, the urine test remains unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline for drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. By collecting hair near the scalp, it's possible to achieve an approximate 3-month detection span for substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both preliminary testing and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional substances, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advocate for measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If obtaining scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. It should be noted that when referring to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other categories of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for analyzing a drug test outcome comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory steps of entering a sample into a lab's system. This step includes checking that the sample is intact and correctly sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplemental data not captured through an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment focused on detecting drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical technique to dismiss drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally binding. Any samples that initially test positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a Screening test shows a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), thus making hair drug testing uniquely challenging.

For any positive Screening results, confirmation is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples deemed presumptive positives undergo a washing process before confirmation as per requirements. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair testing can reveal drug use extensions up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a lesser detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Maneuvering around hair drug tests is tough, thus making the findings highly reliable.
  • Details historical consumption: It delineates the trend of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, beyond just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of indicating immediate use: Drugs take between 5-7 days following use to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screening tends to cost more than other available testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements including hair dye and personal hair growth differences might influence the levels of drug indicators in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", in practice, it examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Louisville, CO? The advantages are clear: superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests boast a longer detection window, revealing substance use over the past 90 days, far surpassing the limited timeframe of urine tests. This extended period allows for a more thorough assessment of an individual's substance use history.

Moreover, hair testing minimizes the potential for tampering, a common issue with urine tests. This reliability is crucial for employers who prioritize a drug-free workplace. With hair testing, they can have greater confidence in the results, ultimately supporting better hiring and retention decisions.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers a significant advantage with its extended detection period. In Louisville, CO, this method can detect drug use for up to 90 days, offering a broader view of an individual’s substance activity. Such a capability gives employers and organizations a fuller picture of potential or current employees' substance use patterns.

Employers seeking a reliable overview of an individual’s past drug use can rely on hair testing for its comprehensive detection window. This span of 90 days surpasses the limited timeframes of other testing methods, granting businesses the insight needed for informed hiring and monitoring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Fraud prevention is a critical concern in drug testing, and in Louisville, CO, hair follicle tests stand out for their resistance to tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
