Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Manitou Springs, Colorado. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and we have facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more common for drug testing protocols. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers who enforce strict drug use policies, courts, and probationary cases. A key advantage of hair testing is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, with observed collection making these tests nearly unfeasible to tamper with. However, for drug detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers an extended history of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

Taking a 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended tests, and/or panels beyond ten, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioned, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial task of entering a sample into the laboratory’s system. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use on most samples, any positive result must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require a second confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are released from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging approach to carry out.

Positive screening outcomes are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug assessment methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
