Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in McCoy, Colorado. If you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our centers nationwide, including those in every city, can assist with a hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle tests. These are requested by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts more often than urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers often prefer hair tests. The key advantage is a longer detection window—up to 90 days—via an observed collection, making it difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests still provide the best accuracy for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands offer a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. When testing for EtG, extra tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair covers all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Captures historical use: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine tests in McCoy, CO? The benefits are clear: superior detection accuracy, a longer detection window, and enhanced sample integrity. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
