In Morrison, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If hair or alcohol detection is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair analysis, offering locations across the country to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or providing customized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent than traditional methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often favor hair tests because they abide by zero-tolerance policies, and individuals on probation are also tested this way. The main advantage of hair tests is their prolonged detection window for drug usage—up to 90 days. Collecting samples under supervision makes them almost immune to tampering. However, for the most accurate detection of recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substances through biomarkers embedded in the hair's fibers as it grows. When collected close to the scalp, a hair sample can provide a detection span of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. This method is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

By obtaining a 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, around 100mg of hair is secured, which is the preferred amount for screenings and verifications. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair isn't an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Meanwhile, body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory's drug testing workflow involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary processing of a specimen into the lab's records, which includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary scan for substances of abuse. While it offers a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result from screening requires further confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are derived from the hair at significantly low levels compared to other methods like urine or oral fluids, which accounts for hair testing being the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of all positive screenings is performed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that give a presumptively positive result are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and aligned with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify substance use up to 90 days out, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It provides insight into a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incumbent limitation on detecting recent use: About 5-7 days must pass before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal disparity in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine testing in Morrison, CO? Hair tests have a longer detection window and can uncover drug use patterns that urine tests might miss, offering employers a clearer picture. The superiority of hair testing lies in its detection precision and less vulnerability to deceptive tactics like tampering, unlike urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection period offered by hair follicle testing in Morrison, CO, enables employers to gather a comprehensive drug use history over a span of up to 90 days. This extensive window allows for a more complete picture, offering insight into both recent and past substance use, aiding in informed decision-making regarding potential hires.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Morrison, CO, significantly reduce risks associated with sample tampering. This method ensures reliable results, due to the difficulty in altering or substituting hair samples, compared to more conventional methods, thus providing a trustworthy basis for testing that withstands scrutiny and maintains integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
