Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination in Mountain Meadows, Colorado. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities available in all cities nationwide suited for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for screening substances. An increasing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor the hair drug test over traditional urine testing. This method appeals to employers with strict drug policies, judicial bodies, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days, collected during a supervised process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine testing remains more precise when detecting recent drug consumption within the previous five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can yield up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (close to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for verification and analysis. For EtG, additional features, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferable. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s balance. If hair from the scalp is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. Concerning head hair, we are specifically discussing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The four key steps involved in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial inclusion of a specimen into a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not issued by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial swift assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in the majority of specimens, a positive screen needs affirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any specimens that are tentatively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a specimen tests tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the preliminary sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug evaluations are the most challenging methodology to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo a wash process before validation if required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug evaluation:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can detect substance use for up to 90 days compared to urine evaluations which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug evaluation, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical records: It can exhibit a trend of substance use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally demand higher costs than alternative drug evaluation methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Whilst often termed "hair follicle evaluations", the test inspects the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
