Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is available in Mountain Village, Colorado through Accredited Drug Testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with locations across the country. Hair from the crown of the head or body is typically needed at a length of 1.5 to 2 inches. These tests help detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has garnered increased adoption over the years. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, the judiciary, and probation officers utilize these tests, given their prolonged detection capability, extending up to 90 days and ensuring minimal chance of tampering. Urine tests, however, remain superior for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to about 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory system. It involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples considered presumptively positive during Screening do require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other approaches (ex. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Reduced susceptibility to cheating: Hair drug tests are difficult to compromise, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provision of historical data: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: A duration of about 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
