Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Mulford, Colorado. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair testing. We have facilities in numerous cities across the nation ready to execute hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or elsewhere on your body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug assessments have become a popular choice over conventional methods. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts opt for hair testing over urine tests. These tests serve firms adhering to zero-tolerance rules, court mandates, and probationers. The hair follicle drug test's key advantage is its extended detection span, up to 90 days, executed under observation, making tampering nearly unfeasible. Still, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use suspicion in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screening can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenges in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug use spanning a duration, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests" on occasion, the testing process analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
