Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Nederland, Colorado. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing facilities across all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body may be utilized. Hair testing options are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other customizable choices.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle analyses. Employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer these tests over traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests are essential for zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers. Their foremost advantage is a longer drug-use detection span, up to 90 days, and they are nearly foolproof, although urine tests are optimal for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data that an electronic chain of custody might not provide.

Screening provides a preliminary and rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to eliminate the majority of drug use cases, a positive result then requires confirmation to be admissible legally. Presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

When a sample results in a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial specimen is allocated for Extraction. Here, drugs are derived from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug tests pose higher challenges.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation when indicated. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to reviews under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs as compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
