In New Raymer, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening. Whether you need a drug or alcohol check through hair, we're experts in hair analysis with facilities in every major city across the nation. Hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically necessary on the head or body for these tests. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol, or be tailored for other specific analyses.

Lately, drug screening often involves a hair follicle examination. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor hair analysis over the traditional urine test. This approach is adopted by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. The chief advantage is its expansive detection window, often extending to 90 days, collected under observation to thwart tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term archive of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly immune to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) from the closest point to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When indicating head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves verifying the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-saving approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires further confirmation to be legally accepted. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed beforehand as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is ISO / IEC 17025 accredited.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to tampering: Entirely challenging to cheat a hair drug test, thus delivering more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: Capable of revealing a timeline of drug usage, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
