Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug assessments in the states of Ohio and Colorado. If you're seeking a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, we excel in this field, operating testing centers in all major cities across the nation. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body suffices for sampling. Hair samples can be evaluated for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In the last few years, hair follicle tests have become a favored method for drug evaluation. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair analyses over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug policies, legal systems, and parole officers use these tests. The chief advantage is its extensive detection span—often up to 90 days—collected through direct supervision, making alteration difficult. Yet, for recent consumption within five days, urine analysis is still considered most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and narcotics by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. If taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hairs (roughly matching the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the perfect sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, extras, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. Reference to head hair is exclusive to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample’s initial handling within the lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in a vast majority of samples; however, a confirmed screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples judged presumptively positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result at Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than found in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

The verification of any positive Screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating is exceedingly difficult with hair drug tests, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can highlight a history of drug usage over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", it actually analyzes the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
