Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance screenings in Orchard, Colorado. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, our extensive network of centers allows for easy access across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method of screening in recent times. Many employers, courts, and specialists in Substance Abuse now favor these tests over traditional urine screenings. These tests are utilized by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers. Their main advantage is a detection capability spanning up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection, making them nearly foolproof. However, for detecting very recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most effective option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. A sample collected adjacent to the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use history for up to around three months. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) gathered near the scalp yields about 100mg, which is the perfect quantity for both screening and confirming tests. For EtG tests, additional checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advised. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially received into the laboratory's database. This involves confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any remaining data entry absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for initially ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive Screening must be validated to have legal standing. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positives at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in concentrations lower than those in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection periods: Hair drug testing can track substance use for up to 90 days, versus the shorter detection duration of urine tests.
  • Alteration is arduous: Hair drug tests are particularly resistant to tampering, thus yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It offers insight into drug usage patterns over time, rather than just a recent glimpse.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: There is approximately a 5-7 day period before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often entail higher costs compared to alternate testing approaches.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
