Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Peoria, Colorado. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair analysis, with testing centers across all major cities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, hair from the crown of your head or from the body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or through other custom hair testing methods.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing procedures. This method is preferred by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probation monitoring have adopted hair follicle testing due to its extensive detection period for drugs, which can last up to 90 days. This method involves an observed collection process, making it very hard to manipulate. However, for screening recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, an amount of 150mg is advised. It’s recommended to gauge the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair only. "Body hair" includes all other hair types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed in the lab’s system. This step includes verifying that the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial quick scan for drug abuse. While a screening is a cost-efficient method for negating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation before it’s permissible in court. Any sample indicating a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing is the hardest methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing a presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a limited detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It presents a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
