Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing for drugs in Pitkin, Colorado. Specializing in hair tests for both drugs and alcohol, we have centers nationwide, ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Options include analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing.

Over recent years, hair follicle tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer these over urine tests. This method benefits employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation requirements due to its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days. This observed method is also hard to cheat, although urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a key instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, offering a profound record of alcohol and drug use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields about 100mg, which is the optimal specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent mass of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test in the lab consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the lab’s system. It includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a prompt preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening effectively excludes drug use in most samples at a lower cost, positive screens require confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are washed as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Yields historical insight: It provides drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Differences in hair color and personal hair growth rates can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over urine tests in Pitkin, CO? The superior detection accuracy of hair testing makes it invaluable. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent drug use, hair analysis provides a comprehensive view over time. This higher level of accuracy and reliability makes hair testing the preferred option for thorough substance detection.

Hair testing is more effective than traditional urine tests due to its longer detection span. With the ability to detect drug use over several months, it proves more reliable for employers and legal institutions in Pitkin, CO, seeking comprehensive drug use assessments. Rely on hair follicle testing for superior accuracy and peace of mind.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Pitkin, CO, offers an extended detection window, up to 90 days. This method provides employers with a deeper insight into an individual’s substance history. The comprehensive detection span ensures that employers can confidently assess the long-term substance use patterns of employees or job applicants.

The prolonged detection period is a standout feature of hair follicle testing. Unlike short-term tests, it reveals drug use up to three months in the past. For employers in Pitkin, CO, this means a comprehensive understanding of an individual's history, making hair testing an essential tool for informed hiring and employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One major advantage of hair follicle tests in Pitkin, CO, is their tamper-resistant nature. By significantly reducing the risk of adulteration, these tests offer reliable and unquestionable results. Employers seeking certainty in substance use assessments can trust hair testing to provide accurate and tamper-proof outcomes.

Tampering with hair follicle tests is nearly impossible, making them a reliable choice. In Pitkin, CO, these tests protect against sample tampering, ensuring integrity in drug use assessments. Opt for hair testing to eliminate doubts and achieve dependable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
