Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rand, Colorado. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing shines in hair testing expertise, with centers in all cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required for testing. Hair tests are capable of analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Over recent years, drug testing methodologies have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are indispensable for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, the legal system, and probationary conditions. A key advantage is their extended detection span of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, making them nearly foolproof. However, for spotting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-standing record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can yield up to an estimated 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary analyses, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift check for abusive drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples presumably positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumably positive during the Screening stage, extra hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than in other approaches (e.g. urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening remains the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleansed before verification as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the authorization to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which possess a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus the findings are more reliable.
  • Delivers historical data: It can present a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
