Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Red Cliff, Colorado. Whether you require a hair or alcohol test, our company excels in delivering accurate hair testing. We have facilities in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG and offer other hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and for probation conditions. Its primary benefit includes a significantly extended detection period of up to 90 days. However, urine tests remain the most effective for recent (up to 5 days) drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol presence. The hair can retain historical data of substances by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. Collected near the scalp, it offers an alcohol and drug detection capacity of up to roughly 3 months. The collection process is straightforward, resisting manipulation, and is simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the ideal amount for testing. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses facial, axillary, and other types.

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample enters the lab’s system. It includes checking the sample's seal and shipping condition, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any manual data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive result here needs confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test positively in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positive initially, more of the hair from the original sample is used for the Extraction process. Drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of initially positive screening results is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as per requirement. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection window: Hair drug tests offer a detection span of up to 90 days, longer than that of urine tests.
  • Challenging to fake: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical use: It provides a usage pattern over time, rather than just detecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't show recent use: Drugs need 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
