In Redmesa, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair-related drug or alcohol assessments, they have centers nationwide, capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Nowadays, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair drug tests over urine tests. This preference stems from hair tests’ prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, making them harder to evade. Yet, for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs thanks to biomarkers being captured within its growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a matching amount of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive result must be corroborated for it to be permissible in court. Any specimens that are tentatively positive in Screening require secondary verification.

If a specimen is tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples tentatively positive undergo washing prior to verification as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to ninety days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, increasing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent drug use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur a higher cost than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
