In Seven Hills, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. When a hair drug or alcohol assessment is needed, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we provide testing facilities across all U.S. cities. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, typically from the head or body, for drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction recently as a preferred method for screening against drug use. This is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and rehab professionals. The significant advantage lies in the expanded detection window, allowing substance identification up to 90 days in a supervised setting, making it nearly fraud-proof. However, for detecting new use (within 5 days), urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair analysis has emerged as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of long-term alcohol and substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a potential detection period for alcohol and drugs extending up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential procedures in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial management of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. It incorporates ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs. While it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs verification for legal admissibility. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite common references to "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
