Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Severance, Colorado. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in this area with testing facilities spread across various cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be adapted for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair analyses over routine urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary individuals for their extensive detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making them hard to manipulate. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains a long-lasting record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This encompasses confirming the sample was sealed and handled correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a confirmed screen is needed for it to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In the event that a sample tests tentatively positive during the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection range.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It can track a pattern of substance usage over an extended time frame, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Severance, CO, the advantages of hair follicle tests over urine analyses are evident. Unlike conventional methods, hair tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability. Their extended detection range provides more comprehensive insights into substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
