Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Snowmass Village, CO. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert, offering centers in various cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair testing. Hair samples taken from the crown or other body parts should be 1.5 to 2 inches long. These samples are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests align with zero-tolerance drug policies in workplaces and monitoring settings like courts and probation. Their key advantage lies in their extended detection time—up to 90 days—employing supervised collection processes that are nearly foolproof. However, for detecting very recent drug intake within five days, urine testing remains highly effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for examination and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (beard, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test sample consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid examination for drugs of concern. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to negate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be permissible in legal contexts. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most intricate technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the validation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assays can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly hard to counterfeit a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It can reveal a trend of drug intake over an extended duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assays generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Testing in Snowmass Village, CO

Hair follicle tests exceed traditional urine tests in accuracy and detection reliability, particularly appealing to employers and courts. While urine tests cover recent drug use, hair testing offers a broader, more accurate substance history over months. This makes hair testing a superior choice for workplaces enforcing strict drug policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
