Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in St. Mary's, Colorado. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities nationwide for conducting these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized analyses.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for detecting drug use. This type of test is often mandated by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. It suits organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial scenarios, and probation requirements. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window for drug use, which spans up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that's hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests are still deemed the most precise for detecting drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biological markers within the growing strand fibers, offering a historical record of drug and alcohol use. Samples clipped near the scalp can provide a detection span of up to roughly three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

To acquire an optimal 100mg sample for analysis, approximately 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp is required. For tests involving EtG, additional elements, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg is preferable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase that involves inputting a sample into the lab's system. This step includes checking the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive is necessary for legal proceedings. Samples indicating presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of positive results from Screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing as needed. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use history up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a confined detection span.
  • Tamperproof nature: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological insight: This method shows drug use trends over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates may influence drug metabolite presence in hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
