Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing services in Trimble, Colorado. Those in need of drug or alcohol testing can turn to us for hair exams, as we have centers nationwide, including all major cities. Most tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head, though body hair can also be used. Our hair tests can screen for substances, alcohol (ETG), or tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained popularity in drug testing procedures. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts often choose hair testing over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers value the benefits of hair testing, particularly its longer detection window, typically up to 90 days. This method, conducted under supervision, is also nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The effectiveness of hair testing has made it a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending up to roughly three months. This type of sample is straightforward to obtain, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

When a 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) next to the scalp is collected, it can provide 100mg of hair – the optimal amount for initial tests and verification. For tests such as EtG, extra analytes, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's best to measure the weight on a jeweler’s scale. If there's a lack of scalp hair, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in processing a laboratory drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab’s system, confirming proper sealing and transport of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information not entered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drug presence. While Screening effectively identifies drug use absence in most samples at a lower cost, any positive finds must be substantiated for legal use. Positive Screening results necessitate further confirmation through secondary testing.

If a positive result appears during the Screening, more hair from the original sample is required for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at smaller concentrations compared to methods like urine or saliva tests, making hair drug testing a complex procedure.

Confirmation for any positive Screening results is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any sample with a presumptive positive result undergoes washing before Confirmation as needed. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine analyses which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify: Bypassing a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Gives chronological data: It captures a drug consumption pattern over a length of time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: In general, hair drug evaluations cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can vary due to factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing actually involves the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out over urine testing in Trimble, CO, offering unrivaled detection accuracy and reliability. Where traditional urine tests might falter, hair tests excel with their capability to detect past substance use over a longer period. This reliability is crucial for maintaining integrity in employment settings and ensuring compliance with stringent policies.

Employers favor hair testing due to its extended detection window, making it an ideal tool for assessing an individual's long-term adherence to drug-use policies. In comparison, urine tests offer a shorter detection span, often missing significant substance use history. A hair test's broader scope of detection provides a more comprehensive substance use profile.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection ability of hair follicle testing is its standout feature in Trimble, CO. This method can catch drug use for up to 90 days, offering employers in-depth insight into an individual's substance habits. This wide timeframe is unmatched by other testing methods, which typically cover shorter periods, making hair testing particularly valuable for comprehensive evaluations.

Employers gain a detailed perspective on an applicant or current employee's behavior patterns, enhancing decision-making. The expansive detection window of hair follicle testing thus proves indispensable for ensuring workplace safety and compliance over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Trimble, CO, provide a tamper-resistant testing option, significantly mitigating risks associated with sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to various manipulations, hair testing offers a secure and reliable method for substance detection, ensuring results remain uncontestable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
