Located in Vernon, Colorado, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in this area, with testing locations in every U.S. city ready to conduct the test. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient. These tests can be tailored to assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for these tests over traditional urine ones. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation commonly use these tests. One key advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days. Although nearly foolproof, urine tests are more precise for screenings within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use. It records alcohol and drug history over time by embedding markers in the strands as the hair grows. Hair obtained near the scalp can offer a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) positioned closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing purposes and confirmations. For EtG, added tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable for accurate measurement. Should scalp hair not be an option, the same quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in a lab primarily consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first processed into the lab's system. This process ensures that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen findings necessitate further confirmation to be accepted in legal settings. Presumptively positive samples in Screening need secondary verification.

If a sample is presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is utilized from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex technique available.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspect samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 3 months, unlike urine tests, which have a brief detection window.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: Provides an overview of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage is undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Please note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
