Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Vigil, Colorado. If you require drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, our specialty in this field ensures accurate results. Our nationwide locations, including in all cities, allow for convenient hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. This method evaluates drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offers other custom hair analysis.

There's been a shift towards using hair follicle testing for drug evaluation. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer this over traditional urine tests. It's often favored by workplaces with zero-tolerance policies. The key advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use over a 90-day span, with observation making fraud nearly impossible. For recent usage within five days, urine tests still hold the edge in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strings capture markers of substances and alcohol within the fibers as they grow, offering a lengthy overview of such usage. When harvested near the scalp, hair presents a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair sampling is easy, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately equal to a #2 pencil's thickness) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp-based hair only. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages in processing a drug test outcome in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary sorting of a sample within the lab’s setup. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data input not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening carries out an initial swift verification for drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to discard drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

In instances where a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the existing sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in smaller concentrations than with alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to why hair drug testing is notably complex.

Confirmation of any positive Screen is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation requests. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection timeline.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests pose significant challenge to manipulate, resulting in more dependable results.
  • Provides historical data: This method can illustrate drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
