Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services right in Wah Keeney Park, Colorado. Specializing in hair-based tests for drugs and alcohol, our centers are available nationwide to conduct these tests. Hair should be about 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body to be eligible. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard procedure in drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals lean towards hair drug tests rather than conventional urine tests. With zero-tolerance policies, hair follicle drug tests provide extensive detection, up to 90 days long, collected under observation, making it extremely hard to falsify results. Urine tests, however, are better for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers a comprehensive timeline of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When acquired near the scalp, hair samples can indicate drug or alcohol use within an almost three-month timeframe. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch chunk of about 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, an ideal sample size for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and screens exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferable. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The processing of drug tests in a lab includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a specimen into a lab’s database. This step involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data input absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening performs a rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for ruling out drugs in most samples, court validation requires confirming positive results. Presumably positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a specimen is preliminarily found positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify: Tampering with hair drug tests is highly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals trends in substance usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Doesn't identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Price: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variability in findings: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the method analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
