Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Ward, Colorado. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and boasts testing locations nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for analysis, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly embraced hair follicle tests. These are now often favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred in zero-tolerance environments and probation settings due to their longer detection time of up to 90 days and resistance to tampering; however, urine tests remain ideal for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent mass of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair types (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory are: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for legal purposes. Samples that return a presumptive positive result in Screening need further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is excised from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are affirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The full lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect for shorter durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Longitudinal data: It provides a usage pattern over time, rather than just indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days from usage.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Ward, CO, the benefits are clear. Hair testing showcases superior detection accuracy and reliability. With the ability to trace substances over extended periods and reduced chances of tampering, it offers a robust evaluation of substance use history compared to the shorter detection window of urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
