Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Wild Horse, Colorado. For any hair drug or alcohol test needs, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide with centers available in every city, ready to administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the go-to method for drug screening. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine tests. This type of testing suits employers with zero-tolerance drug use rules, courts, and probationers. The key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, performed under direct observation, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. Despite this, when screening recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use. It offers an extended history of drug and alcohol presence by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for initial testing and verification. For EtG assessments, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measurement is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other forms of hair (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This process includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for illegal substances. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, positive results must be verified for court acceptance. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a further confirmation test.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Drugs in hair are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing more challenging.

The verification of any positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Provides historical patterns: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier in comparison to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
