Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive testing using hair follicles for drug detection in Wolcott, Colorado. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing extends Nationwide, with centers in every city ready to conduct a test. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head is needed, but body hair can alternatively be used. These analyses can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other specific circumstances.

Recently, there's been a rise in the use of hair follicle tests for drug screenings. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers that have zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation increasingly rely on hair tests. The main advantage is a more extended detection window, typically spanning up to 90 days, featuring a well-supervised collection process, making it very difficult to deceive. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detection within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a significant method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can yield a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to alter, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, constituting the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step covers verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary, swift evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentration levels than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, versus urine tests which possess a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the results' accuracy.
  • Presents historical data: It can present a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine testing in Wolcott, CO. Superior detection accuracy is one such benefit, as the hair follicle test can identify patterns of substance use over a longer period. Unlike urine analysis, the hair test reflects one's history of drug use, not just recent exposures. Moreover, hair tests are less susceptible to tampering, providing more reliable and trustworthy results.

Extended Detection Window

What sets hair follicle testing apart, especially in Wolcott, CO, is its extended detection window that can last up to 90 days. This comprehensive testing period offers employers a substantial view of an individual's drug use history, allowing for a thorough evaluation of potential employees or current staff. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
