Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Bridgewater, Connecticut. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we provide testing facilities across every city nationwide capable of performing such evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head’s crown is necessary, or body hair can be used in many scenarios. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the practice of conducting drug assessments has increasingly included hair follicle testing. Many businesses, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists demand hair analyses rather than standard urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are utilized by employers enforcing strict drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers. The main advantage is the longer detection period, up to 90 days, gathered through a supervised collection method, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, for detecting usage within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands preserve a historical record of substance use by embedding biological markers within its growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of about three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for preliminary tests and confirmations. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, an initial handling of the sample occurs within a lab’s system. This phase involves ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any lacking data entry not supplied via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drug abuse. Though it’s an efficient measure to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples marked as potentially positive in Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample is suspected positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, substances are drawn from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug testing a challenging procedure.

All positive screen results proceed to Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS approaches. All suspected positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is validated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating results in a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: It reveals drug use patterns over time, rather than just short-term use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bridgewater, CT, when comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests, hair testing stands out due to its superior detection prowess. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can reveal drug use over a significantly extended period, offering more comprehensive historical data. This enhanced detection capability is crucial for employers keen on maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Moreover, the reliability of results from hair testing is noticeably higher. While urine tests might show recent substance use, they lack the broad detection window of hair analyses. This makes hair testing a preferred choice for employers, courts, and professionals seeking a full picture of substance use, ensuring informed and strategic decision-making with a high degree of accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Bridgewater, CT, provides extended detection that spans up to 90 days. This comprehensive timeframe allows employers to monitor an individual's substance habits far beyond recent consumption moments, offering insights into long-term behavior. This prolonged detection window is particularly beneficial for enforcing consistent workplace policies.

Employers gain a holistic understanding of an employee's or candidate's drug history, facilitating informed hiring and retention decisions. Such extensive detection surpasses traditional test limits, aligning with organizational standards that prioritize ongoing commitment to a drug-free environment by capturing an accurate drug use footprint.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bridgewater, CT, hair follicle tests offer an exceptionally tamper-resistant method for drug screening. The inherent nature of the test makes it exceedingly difficult to adulterate samples, thus providing more trustworthy outcomes. Unlike other testing methods where sample substitution or adulteration is possible, hair tests prevent such scenarios with their robust collection and testing processes.

The assurance of reliable results underpins the advantage of hair testing. In an era fraught with sample-tampering strategies, hair testing stands out, offering peace of mind with every test conducted. Employers and courts can count on the authenticity and integrity of hair follicle test results, ensuring accurate representation of substance use without the fear of skewed data.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
