Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Canaan, Connecticut. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in providing hair testing with centers across all cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are collected. Our hair tests are suitable for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are particularly favored by workplaces with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation requirements. A significant advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period of about 90 days, along with sample integrity during collection, making them challenging to circumvent. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Acknowledged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by capturing markers within the hair's growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample length of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG additions and/or tests examining over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair is an alternative. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair; body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result primarily involves four procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is integrated into the lab's system. This includes ensuring the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any complementary data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for any drug abuse signs. Although Screening is an economical approach for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive finding must be substantiated for court acceptance. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening warrant additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positively during the Screening process, further strands are extracted from the prime specimen and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the challenge of performing hair drug testing.

The affirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory course from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Challenging to tamper: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to tampering, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Chronicles usage history: It can outline a pattern of substance consumption over time, not merely spotlighting recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Limits on recent detection: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", what is examined is the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
