Accredited Drug Testing in Central Manchester, CT, offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. For those requiring drug or alcohol assessments, our centers, located in many cities across the nation, are equipped to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is generally required. Results can include drug, alcohol/ETG detection, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists have made this switch, prioritizing hair tests over the standard urine test. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial oversight, and probationary contexts by offering a longer drug detection period—up to 90 days—and ensuring low chances of manipulation, thus providing more secure results than urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures historical data of substances by holding biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and roughly comprising 200 hairs (matching the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests covering more than 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for precise weighing. Should scalp hair be lacking, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair represents all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test analysis in the laboratory follows four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary handling of a sample by a laboratory. This step covers ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any leftover data entries not covered by an automated chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs. Although a cost-efficient technique for eliminating drug usage in most cases, any positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples showing a positive result during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a specimen return a positive result in Screening, further hair is separated from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower degrees than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting a greater challenge in hair drug testing.

To validate any positive screening, Confirmation is performed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in alignment with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: With a detection range of up to 90 days, hair drug tests surpass urine tests that have shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to adulterate: The difficulty in tampering with a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It reveals trends in drug consumption over a span of months, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent detection: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains strictly to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
