For comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Chester, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to resource. Specializing in hair testing, we provide facilities nationwide for your testing needs. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Our hair analyses include tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle testing has become a common method for drug screening in recent years. This testing procedure is preferred by numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Companies enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation services favor hair tests due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days and minimized risk of cheating. However, when testing for usage within 5 days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a detailed timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage for a period of up to about three months. This method is straightforward to obtain, relatively tamper-resistant, and conveniently transportable.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is ideal for initial screening and verification. For EtG evaluations, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the hair sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key procedures in laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. It involves verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any additional details not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the provided sample for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most challenging methods to execute.

Any positive results from screenings undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urinalysis with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly difficult, thus delivering more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies usage history: It shows a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
