Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug analysis in Clinton, Connecticut. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, offering testing locations in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be utilized. The hair can be examined for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other customized tests.

The trend towards including hair follicle drug tests has increased in recent years. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer a hair drug test instead of the conventional urine test. Employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation frequently use these tests. The significant advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, and conducted under observation, making it difficult to deceive. However, a urine test remains the accurate choice when testing recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Using hair as a testing method has gained recognition as an effective approach for identifying substance use, both drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal substance use over a period extending up to roughly 90 days. The process of hair collection is straightforward, tampering poses a challenge, and it can be transported with ease.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp can yield 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG tests, extra tests, and/or assessments that exceed 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested that the specimen’s weight is measured using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. The term body hair includes other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the laboratory trajectory of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial stage of integrating a sample within a lab's framework. This stage involves confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, the assignment of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening constitutes a preliminary swift evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient mechanism to dismiss drug usage across most samples, positive screens require confirmation to gain legal admissibility. Samples testing positive at the Screening stage necessitate a subsequent confirmation process.

When a presumptive positive emerges in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial batch and made ready for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are derived from the hair at concentrations far lower than those in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug screening stands as the most complex methodology.

Confirmations of positive screening outcomes are executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any presumptively positive samples undergo a cleaning process prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests having a shorter detection span.
  • Cheating difficulty: Cheating on a hair drug test is significantly challenging, which enhances the result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: Displays a pattern of substance usage over time, instead of merely current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug testing is generally costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests," the testing process analyzes the hair strand and not the scalp-embedded hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
