Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Colebrook, Connecticut. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with facilities available across cities nationwide. Hair samples, typically 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body, are used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug screening increasingly employs hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often choose hair tests over standard urine analyses. Particularly used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers, the tests' prolonged detection—up to 90 days—occurs via supervised collection, minimizing cheating. Urine tests remain most precise for detecting use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair's growing fibers. Hair samples taken near the scalp provide up to a three-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100 mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150 mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" means any other hair type (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The lab analysis of a drug test result consists of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the start of processing a sample within a lab's system, which includes confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entries that an electronic chain of custody system doesn’t cover.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While it's a budget-friendly method to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be legally credible. Samples yielding presumptive positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. In this step, drug substances are extracted from hair, which occurs at much lower levels than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to carry out.

Any positive screening outcome undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washes are performed on all presumptive positive samples before Confirmation. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is performed under the supervision of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Expanded detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to bypass: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring the accuracy of the results.
  • Shows usage trends: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over a prolonged period, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Typically named "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
