Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in East Brooklyn, CT. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair examinations, and our testing facilities span cities nationwide to cater to such needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, either from the head or body. Through hair tests, we can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customize other testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have leaned more towards utilizing hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine exams. Hair follicle tests serve those enforcing strict no-drug-use rules, court requirements, or those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection time for drugs—to up to 90 days through an observed process, making it hard to deceive. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy to mail.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, with approximately 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, deemed ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is advisable. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently dismisses drug use in most cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation for it to be legally acceptable. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial submission and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive are washed before confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Effort to deceive: Falsifying results in a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Reveals historical usage: Provides insight into a trend of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variance: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the underlying hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
