In East Windsor, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing means we provide services across cities nationwide, including hair tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for testing.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has leaned towards hair follicle tests. Many companies, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial entities, and probation officers all rely on hair follicle testing. It's favored due to its longer detection span, up to 90 days, its observed collection process, and its resistance to tampering, although urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting substance abuse. Hair serves as a chronological record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the hair as it grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, they offer a detection window of approximately 90 days for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing around 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield an optimal 100mg sample for testing and verification. For EtG tests, additional screenings, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair is suitable. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is logged into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not included in an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances. While Screening is an economical method to identify drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptability. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction step. This involves extracting substances from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair analysis the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is executed using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positive results are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, increasing result reliability.
  • Chronological information: They provide a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days before they become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In East Windsor, CT, hair follicle testing emerges as a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. This method increases detection accuracy, identifying not only drugs but alcohol use effectively. When compared, urine tests offer limited detection windows, making hair follicle tests more dependable for long-term substance analysis.

Employers and legal entities in East Windsor trust hair testing for its comprehensive detection window and reduced risk of manipulation, providing enhanced reliability over urine testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
