In Hampton, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're seeking a drug or alcohol assessment using hair, our National network of testing facilities, including those in your local city, provides expert solutions. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are ideal for conducting these tests, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored options.

Recently, the practice of using hair follicle tests in drug screening has gained popularity. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and probation scenarios due to their extended detection periods of up to 90 days and rigorous collection process. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair might be used. When we mention head hair, we're speaking exclusively of scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample goes through the laboratory's system processing. This step involves checking that the sample is sealed and transported properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid drug abuse check. Although Screening is a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are the methods used to confirm any positive Screening outcomes. Any samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary before confirmation. Throughout the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, all steps are reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, thereby increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individuals' hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Hampton, CT, is a superior alternative to traditional urine tests due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can detect a wider range of substances over a more extended period, making it the preferred choice for employers and legal entities.

The reliability of hair follicle tests outshines that of urine analyses by maintaining consistent accuracy across a broader detection range. This method ensures precise and dependable results, offering a significant advantage.

Extended Detection Window

In Hampton, CT, hair follicle testing provides an expansive detection window, identifying drug use history for up to 90 days. This comprehensive insight allows employers to better understand an individual's substance use history over an extended period.

The extended detection period of hair follicle tests provides employers a thorough view of an individual's past substance habits, highlighting prolonged substance use that shorter-term tests might miss.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Hampton, CT, substantially reduces the possibility of sample tampering, safeguarding the integrity of results. Unlike urine tests, the collected hair strand remains unaffected by common adulteration methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
