Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Lakeville, Connecticut. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing offers expert services in this domain across all cities nationwide. Typically, hair from either the scalp (1.5 to 2 inches long) or body can be sampled. Hair tests can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have gained preference in drug testing. They are increasingly chosen by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with stringent no-drug-use policies, by judiciary systems, and for individuals under probation. A significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, often up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair strand, hair provides an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span for alcohol and other substances of up to around three months. Additionally, hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen’s weight is advised. In instances where scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. In references to head hair, it exclusively implies scalp hair. All other types (facial, axillary, etc.) are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab processing needed to return a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. It includes checking for proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary swift evaluation for substances of abuse. Despite its cost-efficiency in excluding drug use for a majority of samples, a positive result at this stage needs verification to hold up in legal situations. Samples that appear positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Whenever a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to prepare it for Extraction. Here, drug elements are fetched from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (like urine or oral fluids), underlying the intricacy involved in hair drug tests.

Verification of any positive outcomes from Screening is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of all presumptive positive samples is carried out before confirmation. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug assessments can spot drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine exams which present a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, ensuring increased accuracy in results.
  • Provides historical data: It tracks drug use patterns over an extended period rather than merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It typically requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other test methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
