Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lyons Plain, Connecticut. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol test using hair, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this area and provides testing at centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for the test. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for conducting drug tests. Many companies, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer this method over standard urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services favor hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, making them hard to deceive, although for very recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to about three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, comprised of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing for a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While it serves as a cost-effective means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs to be verified to be viable in legal contexts. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples indicating presumptive positivity are washed as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subjected to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a span of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, which yields more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can furnish a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It generally requires around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
