In Marlborough, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our centers are equipped to conduct hair tests in cities all over the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed for testing from the head or body. These analyses can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or selectable hair testing methods.

The practice of drug testing increasingly employs hair follicle assessments these days. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine testing. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services. Hair testing's main advantage lies in its extended drug detection span—typically around 90 days—with secure collection that minimizes the chance of cheating. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most trusted option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair captures a longitudinal profile of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drug presence. Collection is straightforward, modification is challenging, and it is simple to transport.

A hair strand sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, additional substances, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, the equivalent amount from body hair can be used. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The critical steps in laboratory drug test processing consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to entering a sample into the laboratory system, which includes checking if it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for potential drug use. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court validity. Positively screened samples necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be provisionally positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug screening is notably complex.

Confirmation for any positively screened sample is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive samples are subjected to cleaning as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty of falsifying a hair drug test increases result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: Displays a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Marlborough offers superior benefits over urine analysis. This method is unparalleled in detecting drugs over longer periods, enhancing overall accuracy. It is a preferred choice because of its reliability, compared with traditional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
