Located in Mashantucket, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. If a drug or alcohol test via hair is needed, our expertise in hair testing and widespread centers nationwide stand ready to assist. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity over other methods. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are invaluable for organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial needs, and probation mandates. They offer a three-month detection window for drug use, minimize cheating with supervised collections, and remain the most accurate for short-term detection with urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Seeing hair testing as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage is now common. Hair retains a lasting record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the advancing hair strand. When sourced directly from the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection duration for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair fibers (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If no scalp hair is accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be gathered. Here, scalp hair is specifically considered as head hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was secured and conveyed properly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substances of misuse. While Screening affords a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use from most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court acceptance. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentative positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessitated. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests which possess a shorter detection range.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Compromising a hair drug test is notably difficult, therefore enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
