Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Located in New Canaan, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. If there's a need for testing for drugs or alcohol via hair analysis, we excel in this service and have centers across the Nation ready to execute these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Options include testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair test choices.

Recently, hair follicle tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring this method over traditional urine tests. Those with strict drug-use policies such as employers, courts, and probation officers benefit from hair tests’ extensive detection window, lasting up to 90 days, done through monitored collection, making deception near impossible. However, for drug use detected within a 5-day window, urine tests still lead in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term alcohol and drug biomarkers within its fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over an approximate three-month period. It's straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) is close to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. A jeweler’s scale may be used for weighing. If no scalp hair is present, equivalent body hair may be substituted. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (including facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test is divided into four phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where the sample is entered into the lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary procedure that checks for the presence of drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for further processing in Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive screening result. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to evade: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: Offers insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs only become apparent in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In New Canaan, CT, hair follicle testing offers a distinct advantage over traditional urine tests through superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which typically cover a shorter timeframe, hair testing provides insight into drug use over weeks or even months. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
